I played pbchess a little in Kobo Glo HD. It is a great chess program. It may get better if it could support theses:

1. hide chess notation area and has an option to maximize the chess board. It will be great if view area has an option to hide the notation area and the chess board can automatically become maximized (or has an option to maximize the chess board) when notation area is hided.

2. clear or delete moves in chess notation area. It will be great if the recorded notation can be cleared with a button or menu selection. I imported a PGN file and played a variation myself. The notation area automatically record my moves. I don't want the variation moves, but I can not find a way to clear or delete moves. I have to play a new variation to overwrite current moves, which is different from user's prospective.

3. Because there are a lot of PGN games and files available in Internet, It will be great if pbchess can support PGN file directly without importing it into a CDB file. It will be easy for users and good for pbchess, because even in android device, there are only very few PGN viewer applications and many have only limited features.

1. There is a little splitter area between board and notation. Try to move it up/down.
2. All these options already exist. Please see MENU - Game - Edit
3. Not sure ... but I'll think on that

I knew there is a splitter, but it is hard to control. I found it accidently, but I don't know how many users know it. It will be better, if you could have a maximize board selection in the menu.

OK, found it. But It is not very clear from main menu where can find this optation. It is hided deeply inside sub-menu. Deleting or clear chess moves is quite common for user who tries to playing different variations from saved game, so it will be better if the option can be accessed easily for user.

It will be great if main menu selections can be grouped better to make it more user friendly. Because the pbchess has little document, better grouping can help user to use it easily without need document.

pbchess has two main functions, playing chess against computer or study chess from game or puzzle inside CDB file. Besides the general game settings, it will be great if it can be grouped based on these two. Current menu seems to be a little confused to new users. Some of uncommon selections in the main menu such as "Clipboard", "View" etc could be put into sub-menus.

I like the pbchess, it has so many functions and easy to use. But as a new user, I have to say some of menus are confused. pbchess will become better and more popular if it can improve usability

It's not very easy to write terminal application. I tried to find good terminal emulation library but no success. Please create the separate topic in CR forum if you are interested.

Ok, thank you for your reply :)

Hi Sergeyvl, kobo glo user here, first time i enjoy chess, really loving your package so registered a license.

i've a request here not about chess but checkers, my young son and i particulary love to play on the go.

My request would be, a checkers by international rules : 10*10 grid and "flying" kings move any distance along unblocked diagonals.
it could be 2p only mode but we sure will enjoy this.

edit : bumping ! i see my post has been approved by notification but it's been a long time now.
any news about this becoming effective ?

I have been using pbchess in and out for several years, switching to other apps for a while and coming back to pbchess, although I am more a casual player with periods of variable dedication. Pbchess has improved a lot since its beginning. The the database system takes some time to get used to and the user interface (menu navigation) is weird, but I understand it allows having the same code for different platforms and it works quite well on e-ink devices.

Since this thread seems to be used for general suggestions, I am currently playing around with different chess engines and found some minor issues:

1.- It is great to be able to set the engine options in the settings-engine screen. Typical options are Hash (128 or 256) and Threads (number of CPUs of your device). For some reason, when typing the options the cursor keeps jumping around and it is quite difficult to actually enter those options. Ideally it would be great to have specific controls to set the most common options.
2.- The import of new engines seems to be quite a manual process. I ended placing them in the engines folder and editing the corresponding engines.txt file. The good thing is that when installing an app with an engine package, pbchess seemed to recognize them automatically and showed them in the list.
3.- When performing an analysis of a position, the analysis lines do not wrap in the notation box. This might be intended, but it looks weird.
4.- After pausing an analysis, there does not seem to be a way to go through a particular analysis line. The moves are not clickable and the buttons do not apply to the analysis.

Hi!

Thanks!

1. Will be done
2.1 You can just add your engine into engines/uci or engines/xboard folder without adding it to engines.txt. Create these folders if not exist
2.2 There is "open exchange" engines support in Android.
3. There is wrap if we have 1 analyse line. There is no wrap if we have more than 1 analyse line. I want to see all these lines or at least first moves of each line.
4. You can do moves when analysis is in progress.
